Implementation Procedure

Background to the selection of the topic: After completing the mathematics class

-      The students were very interested in using a compass for the first time. They completed the study enthusiastically, but the teacher wanted to do something to help them because they did not fully aquire how to use the compass.

-      Many students practiced using the compass during breaks and for homework (independent study), drawing circles or combining circles to draw illustrations.

-      When teacher introduced the illustrations of circles that the student drew to the class, some of them said, “I want to draw circles, too.”

☆The teacher then asked the children, “Can we discuss this at the classroom discussion?” The children's voices were raised and it became a topic of discussion for the next Classroom Discussion.

1 Prepare for Classroom Discussion (discussion session).

Based on the request of a child who said, “I want to get better at using a compass with everyone,” an discussion topic, “Let's have an Compass Illustration Contest,” was selected.
The Planning Committee members clarified the reasons for the proposal with the teacher and prepared Classroom Discussion notes, etc.
③The opinions of each student in their Classroom Discussion notes were collected in advance, and the opinions were shared with the whole class before the Classroom Discussion (discussion session).

Agenda and reasons for proposal

Reasons for the proposal
I've been having fun learning how to use a compass lately. However, I have just started using a compass and it is difficult. So I thought that if we held an illustration contest using the compass, everyone would have fun while learning to use it, and I thought that I would become more proficient at using the compass.
Objective of discussion
To be able to illustrate with a compass in a fun way together.
Already decided
Tuesday, November 8, 5th period, artwork due: November 7, one piece per person, half the size of drawing paper.

The planning committee members to gather opinions in advance.

2 Classroom Discussion

① In discussion (1), the class discussed “what kind of prizes we want to receive,” and the following prizes were decided: “Flower Award,” “Animal Awaed,” “Sparkling and Wonderful Award,” “Halloween Award” and “Character Award.
During the discussion...When deciding on the “Character Award,” one child said, “It looks too difficult, so we shouldn't do it,” while another said, “There are people who want to do it, so we can do it”, the children showed their respect for the minority's opinion.

②   In Discussion (2), the class discussed “how to make the contest more creative,” and decided that “we would award prizes,” “have an interesting person host the award ceremony”, “(if he/she wants to do so) decide the ranking,” “hang everyone's picture on the blackboard”, and “play music during the awarding of prizes.
” During the discussion...In response to a child's comment that “Ranking the participants makes the lower-ranked ones feel unhappy,” an opinion was expressed, “Why don't we just rank the participants among those who want to do it?” The students showed their understanding of the feelings of both children who want to be ranked and those who are uncomfortable with being ranked.

③ In Discussion (3), the class discussed “what roles are needed for the preparation” and decided on “a role to make certificates for each award”, “a role to play the music,” and “MC for the day.”

3 Preparing for the Compass Illustration Contest.

①   Based on what had been discussed and decided, the students made preparations during break time, etc., and each child drew their own work using a compass.

② When all the children's works were created, they were posted on Rasha paper for each category (award) and displayed, and the children voted for the works of the children they wanted to have ranked.

Reflections of Children

I am happy that everyone enjoyed the contest.

I'm glad everyone seemed happy to receive their certificates.

From the author  (For foreign teachers, points of implementation, etc.)

-When children cannot find items to discuss ( topics of discussion), it is important for teachers to draw out what children “want to do” by observing their daily activities.
-I think that the accumulation of Classroom Discussions by eliciting the children's “want to do” will give the children many opportunities to grow.
- In this way, the children will grow through repeated successes and failures.
-As a teacher, I think it is important not to be afraid of failure, but to trust the children and leave them to their own devices, while also experimenting daily with what kind of guidance and advice I as a teacher need to give them.
